The Technologies that Improve the Fuel Efficiency of the 2023 Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage is all-new for 2023 and it is equipped with more technologies than ever, many of which are engineered specifically to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The Drive Modes

The 2023 Kia Sportage comes standard with a drive mode selection system that allows the driver to choose the mode that best suits the current driving conditions. In Smart mode, the Sportage will determine which mode to use on its own, while prioritizing fuel efficiency. To do so, the drive modes affect the response of the accelerator and the shift pattern of the 8-speed automatic transmission in order to smooth out the accelerations and keep the engine speed as low as possible, two easy ways to lower the fuel consumption.

The auto Start-Stop

The 2023 Kia Sportage is equipped with a start-stop system that turns off the engine when the vehicle is stopped in order to maximize efficiency and reduce the avoidable consumption of fuel. This system works by monitoring the pressure applied on the brake pedal by the driver. As soon as the brakes are released, the engine is seamlessly restarted and the Sportage is ready to resume driving. This makes it so that fuel is burned almost exclusively when the wheels are being powered, thus every drop of fuel used by the engine is used to move the Sportage instead of being wasted by having the engine idle for a few minutes at every traffic light.

The new 2.5L engine

The 2023 Kia Sportage comes standard with a new 2.5L four-cylinder engine that benefits from the latest developments in terms of fuel-saving engineering. This is proven by the fact that this engine is larger than the previous standard engine as well as being more powerful with its 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque and it still manages to be more fuel-efficient, with consumption figures that are as low as 7.4 L/100 km on the highway.
